Create an itinerary including Underwater Post Office
Participate in a one-of-a-kind experience at Underwater Post Office, the world's only official underwater post office. Due to Vanuatu being made of over 80 little islands, an underwater post office seems natural when the sea plays such an important part of life. Located within a marine reserve, visitors buy postcards on land and fill them out before diving to the post office. The mailbox only sits a few meters down, so scuba gear is not required. Snorkelers and casual swimmers can easily reach it, or the reserve staff can help. • I made a point to visit Hideaway Island specifically to post underwater postcards. I think it's very worth it, it's such a cool souvenir to send home. The post office itself isn't actually 'staffed...

  • I wouldn't say it's a "must-do", more of a "cool to do". Approx $6AUD to purchase a postcard and pencil, write your message, then post it yourself. The post box gets cleared daily, and you can say...

  • My highlight of my trip to Vanuatu. A fun little gimic to write on a waterproof postcard and snorkel out into the sea to post your postcards. The water was beautiful and saw lots of fish and reef. The post office wasn't manned the time we went there but we were told someone goes down to collect the mail daily. You can still buy the postcards from when you arrive on the island and hire snorkeles from that shop too so you can post your postcards. I can confirm that it actually works. A postcard arrived in the UK about a week or so later and a postcard to New Zealand took 2 weeks to arrive.
  • The post box was out of the water and so out of action we went, and hideaway island closed - seems the area is still recovering from lack of tourism during COVID. Check whether its open again before making the journey here
