A vital part of royal life since the reign of Richard II, Royal Mews houses the cars, carriages, and horses used by the monarchy on royal and state occasions. It is considered one of the finest working stables in existence. Marvel at the ornate detail of the carriages, including the particularly lavish Gold State Coach. It has been used at every coronation since that of George IV in 1921. You can also admire the some of the fine livery worn by the Queen’s coachmen, which has remained largely unchanged since Victorian times. Be sure to pick up a headset for a free audio tour outlining the history of the Royal Mews and giving insights into how it operates today. Guided tours are also available during peak tourist season. On arrival, you and your belongings will be subjected to airport-style security checks. Try to bring as little as possible with you to get through the security screening more quickly. Using our custom trip planner, London attractions like Royal Mews can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

The Mews was a highlight of our London visit, in part because it was so easy to see! Just a short walk from the Palace (good to do the two together), there was no line to enter and no real crowd...

Very interesting exhibition of the horses, cars, and carriages of the royal family. We enjoyed reading about each of the carriages and for what occasion they were used. The highlight was at the end with the golden carriage that was also used at the platinum jubilee celebration.

The Royal Mews is a must-visit for anyone traveling to London. The knowledgeable guides provide an in-depth look at the history and function of the Mews, including the stunning horse-drawn carriages used by the Royal Family. The highlight of my visit was getting up close and personal with the horses, who were all beautifully groomed and well-behaved. The 60-90 minute tour is the perfect length, allowing you to fit in other attractions in the same day. I regret waiting so long to visit, but I'm so glad I finally made it. Don't miss this hidden gem at Buckingham Palace!
