Chisinau — 2 nights

Chișinău Etymology and namesThe origin of the city's name is unclear, but in one version, the name comes from the archaic Romanian word chișla (meaning "spring", "source of water") and nouă ("new"), because it was built around a small spring, at the corner of Pușkin and Albișoara streets. The other version, formulated by Ștefan Ciobanu, Romanian historian and academician, holds that the name was formed the same way as the name of Chișineu (alternative spelling: Chișinău) in Western Romania, near the border with Hungary. On the 11th (Tue), admire the landmark architecture of Triumphal Arch, pause for some serene contemplation at The Metropolitan Cathedral “Nativity of the Lord”, then stroll around Stefan cel Mare Park, and finally don't miss a visit to Victory Memorial and Eternal Flame. Here are some ideas for day two: do a tasting at Cricova Winery, stroll around Dendrarium Park, and then walk around Valea Morilor.

There's much more to do: contemplate the long history of Bendery Fortress, pause for some photo ops at The Tank Monument, take in the spiritual surroundings of Chitcani Monastery (Noul Neamt), and do a tasting at Kvint.

As one of the smallest countries in Europe, Moldova earned its independence in 1991 and remains quite unknown to most of the world. As Moldova is located between Romania and the Ukraine, much of its culture borrows elements, such as language and traditional food, from its two neighbors. Moldova sports a rugged countryside with a mild and sunny climate thanks to the neighboring Black Sea. This region's outdoor activities--biking, hiking, horseback riding, and exploring caves--are its main attractions. While Moldova doesn't attract much tourism, it is one of the last places in Europe where you can get a completely authentic local experience.
