The capital of Tonga and the seat of the island nation's royal family, Nuku'alofa was first seen by Western eyes in 1777, when legendary Captain James Cook arrived in the area.
Kick off your visit on the 14th (Wed): pause for some serene contemplation at Centenary Church, then relax and rejuvenate at Island Glow, and then steep yourself in history at Captain Cook's Landing Place. Just a little way off the southern end of Grand Terre, Île des Pins (the Isle of Pines) gets its name from the tall columnar pines that stick out of the surrounding vegetation like bristles on a brush.
