Stresa — 10 nights

Stresa is a town and comune of about 5,000 residents on the shores of Lake Maggiore in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, about 90km northwest of Milan. You've now added Isola Bella to your itinerary. Visiting Lake Orta and Kayaking & Canoeing will get you outdoors. Your itinerary includes some good beach time at Spiaggia Miami and Spiaggia di Cerro. Venture out of the city with trips to Melissa Beach (in Golasecca), Golf Club Bogogno (in Bogogno) and Spiaggia Camping Lago Azzurro (in Dormelletto). There's much more to do: contemplate the long history of Palazzo Borromeo, test the waters at Terme di Saint-Vincent, learn about wildlife with up-close encounters at Park Pallavicino, and kick back and relax at Sasso Galletto.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands to Stresa is an approximately 5-hour flight. You can also take a train; or drive. Traveling from Amsterdam in August, things will get a bit warmer in Stresa: highs are around 33°C and lows about 19°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 3rd (Sat) to allow time to fly back home.

Italy's second largest lake, Lake Maggiore, is an oasis of Mediterranean plant and animal life anchoring the south side of the Alps and Swiss border. Featured in Ernest Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms," the lake is known for its mild climate, rare and exotic vegetation, and surrounding mountainous landscape. Tour the many islands with a boat ride across the lake, or explore the villages and gardens that make up its diverse perimeter.
