The centerpiece of the city and one of only three High Gothic cathedrals in the country, Catedral Primada was constructed using white limestone brought here from numerous quarries in the surrounding area. For many visitors, the highlight is the sacristy, with its impressive gallery packed with paintings by El Greco, Caravaggio, Titian, Rafael, Zurbarán, and Velázquez. Begun in 1226 on the site of an ancient mosque, the imposing building was modeled after the Bourges Cathedral in France. Its monumental interior features heavy columns dividing the space into five naves, with several side chapels containing exquisite gold reliefs, huge oil paintings, and portraits of cardinals going back at least 500 years. Photography is strictly forbidden inside, though you can access the bell tower to snap a few shots of the historic city center. • Historical Cathedral of Toledo, it survived the Arab dominance over the Iberian Peninsula, turning from a Catholic Church to a Mosque and again to a Catholic Church.

  • This is a beautiful cathedral in Toledo and well worth a visit. Entry is €10 and includes a audio guide (tickets are available in the shop opposite the cathedral entrance). It's a typical cathedral with grotesque wealth of the church on display, lots of religious art and paintings. There's a lot more to see than I expected too so not bad value for the cost.
  • So much to see and meander through the town. The beauty is literally everywhere...I love that they preserved so much of this town and so many hidden gems of tapas eateries. I could have spent days exploring unfortunately we only had half a day.
