Create an itinerary including Royal Palace of Madrid
Explore at least a few of the 2,000 lavishly decorated rooms of the historic Royal Palace of Madrid, considered one of the finest buildings in the city. Take the grand stairway to discover the state rooms, noted for their detailed tapestries, frescoes, porcelain, carvings, china, and silverware. The courtyard connects to both the old pharmacy, which holds hundreds of bottles of centuries-old medicines, and the royal armory, a two-level exhibit of medieval weapons and armor. Although the enormous palace is the official residence of the King, the royal family doesn’t actually live here; the site is generally used for state ceremonies. Avoid visiting on Wednesdays, when entry is free and the lines are extremely long. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Madrid holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Royal Palace of Madrid and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • No pictures allowed in most of it, so hard to convey to others the level of luxury and opulence. Still a working palace at times. Really stunning...try not to think about the source all of that gold.

  • This is a must-see while in Madrid. Old history comes together with today's Royal family and you'll learn of the important events which have taken place at this palace. There are certain rooms...

  • Grand palace done better with audio guided tour. You can download the app in your own phone and use your own earphones if you don't want to pay for the tablet they provide. It's same. I personally liked the gems- embedded tables. The waiting queue was in scorching heat and it's better to carry umbrella and water. Just outside the palace we also saw an international youth dance group who were performing for the crowd and recording.
  • I have to say I've been to a lot of countries, a few places including Versailles and dozens of museums. Vatican ceilings were cool. I grew up with Viscaya in Miami. This blows them all out of the water. I wish i could take pictures. The armory: incredible. Excellent intact collection. The show armor was exquisite. The king and queen's apartments, the embroidery, the instruments, the woodwork... It's all incredible. Unbelievable. Each king had their own "brand". Check for it on the walls of their personalized rooms.
