Get in touch with Verona's medieval past at Arche Scaligere, which preserve the memory of the Della Scalla family, rulers of the city in the 13th and 14th centuries. The five ornate Gothic monuments occupy the front courtyard of a small church constructed during the 12th century. Shaped like little temples, the tombs remain one of Verona's outstanding examples of Gothic art. Pay special attention to the tomb of Cangrande I, the most celebrated member of the family. In honor of his name, which means "big dog" in Italian, Cangrade's tabernacle-shaped tomb features images of harnessed dogs.
