Perched high above the clouds in the Italian alps, the 17th-century Sacro Monte Unesco di Varese is a sacred mountain. Its 14 hillside chapels each are dedicated to a mystery of the rosary. They lead up to the shrine of Santa Maria del Monte at the top. The chapels are filled with17th-century frescoes, paintings, and sculpture. For centuries, pilgrims have hiked among the beech and chestnut trees of Monte Velate to visit the chapels. Today, you can either walk or catch the bus and tram up the mountain. • Beautiful place for quiet reflection, and a peaceful walk. Amazing view of the surrounding areas too. Would make sure that you are surefooted, and probably not suited for a pram unless it’s a Thule buggy or similar as the cobblestones are quite large. There is also limited parking facilities, so would suggest trying to visit at non peak times too.
  • Beautiful place, nice walk, great view. It's a pity that we didn't really find a coffee or restaurant nearby the parking point (First Chapel). I was happy that the church was open. The statues inside the chapels are not easy to watch and there are no English texts.
