Perched high above the clouds in the Italian alps, the 17th-century Sacro Monte Unesco di Varese is a sacred mountain. Its 14 hillside chapels each are dedicated to a mystery of the rosary. They lead up to the shrine of Santa Maria del Monte at the top. The chapels are filled with17th-century frescoes, paintings, and sculpture. For centuries, pilgrims have hiked among the beech and chestnut trees of Monte Velate to visit the chapels. Today, you can either walk or catch the bus and tram up the mountain. • Here’s the tip: take the funiculora or fermata, the funicular train up, and walk down. Go early in the morning. Bring hats and water and sunscreen. And change. It’s 1€ plus per person for a bus trip.....  more

  • Sacro Monte or Sacred Mountain as we Brits would say is a mile long walk up a steep mountain set with 13 chapels at even intervals. Each Chapel has a biblical scene of the events surrounding the birth, death & rising of Jesus. At the top of the mountain are a choice of restaurants with great food with amazing views. The Italian locals love this walk - good for tourists too.
  • Beautiful place, nice walk, great view. It's a pity that we didn't really find a coffee or restaurant nearby the parking point (First Chapel). I was happy that the church was open. The statues inside the chapels are not easy to watch and there are no English texts.
