Often considered Italy's "Little Jerusalem," Pitigliano is an excellent place to dive into Italo-Jewish history, and there is perhaps no better starting point than Piccola Gerusalemme di Maremma. The gold-and-white synagogue was built in 1598 and boasts carved pews, a wooden pulpit, and a Holy Ark. Though the synagogue is rarely used today, you can still check out the venues for the ritual bath, the striking of unleavened bread, and the kosher butcher and winery. Surrounding the synagogue is the ghetto, where you can find a labyrinth of alleys, winding staircases, small squares, and shops. This historical ghetto served as the center of the Jewish community in Pitigliano for many centuries, and is a charming place to lose yourself in today. • The city has a unique story to tell about the Jewish community and the Jewish people that lived here or moved here for their protection prior to, during and after the WW2 period. Interesting...

  • I had never seen anything like it. They were mixed in this pain show (concentration camps with everyday scenes). Rooms, many rooms carved into the rock for the “daily life (if you can call it that)) of the Jews in Pitigliano over the centuries! Touching and exciting!
  • When you come to Pitigliano for the first time, you cannot fail to visit this museum rich in history and well managed by the community. The entrance ticket is € 5 and for men who want to access the Synagogue it is advisable to bring a hat or for an additional € 1 they provide their kippah at the entrance. In the museum you can visit the Kasher butcher, the unleavened oven, the cellar and the ritual bath all dug into the tuff.
