Create an itinerary including Cattedrale di Palermo
Cattedrale di Palermo was erected in 1185 to replace a ninth-century mosque. Explore the church and observe the different styles--attributed to a long history of additions, alterations, and restorations--that characterize the building. Look for the column with the Quran verse carved on it, a remnant from the mosque, and admire the 13th-century mosaic of the Madonna. The Sacrament chapel is adorned with precious stones and lapis lazuli. You can visit the tombs of several important figures who have been laid to rest here, including Emperor Henry VI, Peter II of Sicily, and Constance of Aragon. Head to the roof for views of the city. Guided tours are available. See Cattedrale di Palermo and all Palermo has to offer by arranging your trip with our Palermo online journey planner.

  • What an amazing building. So overwhelming and prominently showing its richness. Both from the outside as from the inside with a lovely square in front.

  • The main portions in the church were very busy but the bishop's quarters in the attached building was full of artworks and pieces of interest and had very few visitors. The walkway seemed a bit...

  • This place is a must in Palermo. It has rich inside ornaments, paintings and the space inside is so big that makes impression - even on nonbelievers. What I also recommend is a visit on the roof. It takes about 10 minutes to climb up the stairs (about 110 stairs), but it's worth. The panoramic view stays in mind.
  • Great place. Do not miss the treasury with Constance of Aragon crown, it’s unbelievably beautiful. The tombs of Frederick II, his mother, father and grandfather are monumental. The rooftop has a great view over Palermo.
