The only active volcano on the European mainland, Vesuvio National Park is best known for its dramatic eruption in 79 CE, which led to the destruction of ancient cities Herculaneum and Pompeii. The volcano is now the centerpiece of a national park, established in 1995 to prevent further development in the area. The summit of the volcano is open to visitors, with a network of well-maintained paths around the mountain. An access road can get you to about 200 m (660 ft) from the summit (measured vertically), but after that access is on foot only. A spiral walkway leads up the final section of the climb, from the road to the rim of the crater. On a sunny day, you'll have sweeping views of the surrounding area, stretching all the way to the Bay of Naples. Absolutely amazing. Breathless view, heavenly landscapes. Great weather not to hot and not to cold, October is one of the best month and perfect for the climb. Be there and feel the power of the Vesuvio with his thousands years is something extraordinary. From the Vesuvius’ cone you can see and control everything like a king from his throne. He is one of the Naples symbols and honor. You must visit one time in your life and you will never regret it.

The route to the crater of Vesuvius is a very nice route in nature with a very nice view towards the Gulf of Naples. There is a lot of parking space and then there is a hiking trail to the top of Vesuvius. Unfortunately, the path to the top closes in the afternoon, so if you want to combine it with a visit to Pompeii, it is better to come here first and then to Pompeii.
