Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Lombardy / Province of Mantua / Mantua / Basilica di Sant'Andrea di Mantova
One of the major works of 15th-century Renaissance architecture in northern Italy, Basilica di Sant'Andrea di Mantova is the central co-cathedral and minor basilica of Mantova. Commissioned in 1462 on the site of a Benedictine monastery (of which the bell tower remains), the building took 328 years to complete. The basilica is most famous for housing the Preziosissimo Sangue di Cristo, a relic that is believed to contain the blood of Christ. The building was originally erected in order to accommodate the many pilgrims who would flock over the centuries to see the sacred vessels. If you wish to enter the crypt to visit the reliquary, ask one of the church's volunteers. Basilica di Sant'Andrea di Mantova reviews
We went in just in time to see this fine church dressed for a wedding. We had to leave for it after about 20 minutes. My wife, a kern and very able flower arranger, really enjoyed the visit...

Beautiful basilica in the old town. Well worth a visit. It's not huge, so half an hour will probably be enough.

Soul soothing and fulfilling. A feast for the mind and eyes just being in here. I personally prefer visiting churches compared to the Museums or Art galleries - it is usually free of charge, a lot less people and I get to relish their beautiful and unprecedented work of art and architecture. Treasure all around and above - It is best done sitting on one of the long pews and simply look up. There are a staggering collection of beauty and religious significance here. "Do not judge a book by its cover" it is a place that is unassuming on the outside but absolutely phenomenal inside and dominates over the Piazza Mantegna. Here preserves the greatest relic of Christianity: the Sacred Vessels containing the blood of Christ.
Free entry, but don't let that fool you. If you want the church to be lightened up for better vision you need to pay. Beautiful, details in painting and sculpture but open up your spiritual eyes and look at all the demonic signs and symbols of the freemasons.
