The Cimitero Monumentale is one of the two largest cemeteries in Milan, Italy, the other one being the Cimitero Maggiore. It is noted for the abundance of artistic tombs and monuments.Designed by the architect Carlo Maciachini, it was planned to consolidate a number of small cemeteries that used to be scattered around the city into a single location.Officially opened in 1866, it has since then been filled with a wide range of contemporary and classical Italian sculptures as well as Greek temples, elaborate obelisks, and other original works such as a scaled-down version of the Trajan's Column. Many of the tombs belong to noted industrialist dynasties, and were designed by artists such as Adolfo Wildt, Giò Ponti, Arturo Martini, Dante Parini, Lucio Fontana, Medardo Rosso, Giacomo Manzù, Floriano Bodini, and Giò Pomodoro. The main entrance is through the large Famedio, a massive Hall of Fame-like Neo-Medieval style building made of marble and stone that contains the tombs of some of the city's and the country's most honored citizens, including that of novelist Alessandro Manzoni.

  • My name is Diego Patrucco and I live in Turin, my family is all from Casale Monferrato, both in the paternal and maternal branches. Last month, after a long time linked to the disappearance of our mother, my sister Tiziana and I returned to the Cimiteto Monumentale di Casale. Here our grandparents, uncles, great-grandparents rest. Our paternal grandparents are in Casellario numeto 4 which has only been half-restored; due to lack of funds, so we are told, the other half is still unsafe. When will the works to renovate everything resume? It is a reason both for safety for visitors, and to honor many fellow citizens, who in earthly life have contributed to the well-being of the city!
  • Wonderful place. Inside there are numerous tombs that tell the story of famous families of Casale who have written pages of highly respected history. The older tombs show the signs of past centuries, some unfortunately are in a state of neglect, others are no longer accessible due to structural failures, but their charm is undisputed. I recommend a visit to everyone, it is a place that in addition to preserving architectural treasures of inestimable value, makes us reflect on numerous aspects of our earthly life that we often overlook.
