Create an itinerary including Piazza Umberto I
The most famous square on the island of Capri, Piazza Umberto I has been the meeting point and center of town since Roman times. The focal point remains the 18th-century church tower, whose image often stands as a symbol for the island. Host to fish and produce markets in the early 1900s, the square is now filled with a wide array of cafes and restaurants. Settle at an outdoor table to watch the people come and go, or if you stay late enough, catch the sun setting over the sea. From here you can take the funicular back down to the marina.  To visit Piazza Umberto I and get the most from your holiday in Capri, create itinerary details personal to you using our Capri tour planning app.

  • The piazza is very crowded and not that interesting, IMHO. Spending more time in Anacapri would be better.

  • This is the heart of Capri and at night it is filled with people eating in cafes. I was not interested in sitting and eating there, but just sat down and people watched, listened to the music...

  • What could I add that has not been said 100's of times. The views are breathtaking. Riding the funicolare 🚂 up and down from this spot was just a cool experience. Nice area to just get your bearings and explore the island from and always have that tower to find way back to.
  • Food was good, but a small portion. Maybe I didn't understand what I was ordering. Staff were very nice and let us linger without issue. As is standard in Italy, you need to ask for the bill, they don't just drop it off if it looks like you're done. This restaurant is in the upper city (you take the funicular to get there), so a bit pricier than in the lower (by the port and docks). I'd go again.
