In 1000, Greek monks built Abbazia di San Fruttuoso, an ancient monastery nestled alongside a small, turquoise bay. The Romanesque building includes two lookout towers with heavy artillery, marble tombs for nobility, and a museum dedicated to the abbey's history and artifacts. This is also the site of the Christ of the Deep statue that watches out for divers. You can dive into the clear waters among the rocks and touch his hand. San Fructuosus' traditional fishermen's cottages and pine forests create a backdrop for the beach. In ancient times, sailors spread rumors of a dragon living in the caves here so they could keep the bay to themselves. The area is only accessible only by ferry ride from Portofino or via steep trails from Santa Margherita or Portofino Vetta. Using our custom trip planner, Camogli attractions like Abbazia di San Fruttuoso can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

The Abbey is a good example of how the Italian Tourism Authority is trying to restore abandoned holy places and draw tourists to visit. Well done! Access is only by s 40 minutes boat trip, but that in itself is a unique experience. The exhibition is quite basic, but very informative. Everything both in English and Italian. God those who want to swim there is opportunity in the small harbour.
Situated in a secluded bay on a rocky outcrop, it is only accessible via a strenuous hike (high levels of fitness and mobility required) or from one of the many and frequently scheduled boats from near by towns. The Abbey is not an essential visit (I wouldn't recommend paying the €8 museum entry fee). The pebble beach and crystal clear water makes for an excellent day trip. There are also several bars and restaurants in the small bay. It does get very busy at peak times weekends etc so do not expect much solitude.
