Create an itinerary including Chiesa di Santa Maria della Vita
Feast your eyes on Chiesa di Santa Maria della Vita, Nicholas Ark's incredibly lifelike terracotta scene featuring reactions to Christ's death. Dating from the late 15th century, the figures show acute emotion and ferocious drama atypical of their time. You'll notice influences of the sculpture of Burgundy and the later Donatello. After a long stay in the National Gallery of Bologna, the sculptures have been returned to their original home in the church of Bologna, where you'll find them today. • Free to enter, but you can pay €5 (€3 for students) to also see the statues hidden behind a big board. They're actually incredibly emotive. I honestly didn't expect much but was taken aback at the emotion I felt when I saw their faces. I think it's better in real life than the photos can capture. Incredible craftsmanship from hundreds of years ago, made from terracotta!
  • As many others, we came across this church while meandering the streets around city center. It showed the exhibiton was closed on Mondays but the shrine itself was open and it was beautiful. Felt nice to switch from the warm sun and busy day to the cool and calm inside.
