The Palazzo Chigi of Ariccia was the ducal palace of the Chigi family located in the center of the town of Ariccia, near Rome, Italy.Plan trip to Ariccia with our itinerary maker to find out where to go and what to do.
Originally a 15th-century palace of the Savelli family stood at the site, it was rebuilt during 1664 to 1672, in a Baroque style by the Chigi Family. The work was a collaboration between Gian Lorenzo Bernini and his pupil Carlo Fontana. The sober exterior does not reflect the highly decorated interiors. The palace and park were ceded to the Commune in 1988 by the prince Agostino Chigi Albani della Rovere, and now served as a host of exhibitions and events. It hosts the Museo del Barocco Romano encompassed by some of the remaining Chigi family collections. These include the following paintings:

Palazzo Chigi Ariccia reviews
Pity we found the palace closed when we arrived yet the facade and location in Ariccia is worth a visit when open. The Church opposite is imposing and was worth viewing

There was nothing on the exterior to indicate this was a palazzo with over 500 years of history. We went on a guided tour of the living quarters. The wall "paper" being stitched together, embossed...

The villa is very interesting, but you can only visit with a guide and unless you have a group and send a request beforehand, the tours included in the ticket are at fixed times and only in Italian. The villa, designed by Bernini, has been well-restored and while you are going round, the guide explains the history of the powerful Chigi family who built it. Many rooms are covered in an ornate wallpaper made from pieces of decorated leather being stitched together. Although we were hoping to visit the church opposite, we were told nobody is sure of the current opening hours as the priest is overseeing 2 parishes and is either here in the late morning or the late afternoon.
Interesting conglomeration of museum spaces and historical rooms dedicated to telling the story of the influential Chigi family.
