Chiesa di San Giorgio Martire, Albenga

The church of San Giorgio di Campochiesa is located a few kilometers from Albenga, between greenhouses and intensive cultivation. It is a Romanesque church with three naves, built on the site of an early medieval chapel. From the beginning of the seventeenth century, due to the abandonment of the surrounding villages, it decayed and went into ruin. It was restored in the last century. Inside the church, in the main apse, a large fresco, dated 1446, depicts the Last Judgment. It is one of the first testimonies of the figures of Dante and Virgil and of other characters of the Divine Comedy who were painted in the traditional representation of Hell.
