Gendarmenmarkt, Berlin

Regarded as one of the country's most elegant squares, Gendarmenmarkt is dominated by two domed cathedrals and the city's renowned concert hall. The square was created in the 17th century, then massively reconstructed and expanded in 1773 by architect Georg Christian Unger. This public space was named after an 18th-century regiment consisting of French Huguenot immigrants, whose story you can explore at the museum inside the imposing French cathedral. Though many of the historic structures were damaged or destroyed during World War II, the buildings have since been fully restored.
