Tour the remains of a slave trade fortress at Fort James Island, a World Heritage Site. Originally built by a Baltic baron in 1651, the trading settlement was taken over by James, Duke of York in 1661 and subsequently used as an important slave trade outpost. Tour the fort's clearly marked rooms, including the remains of the governor's quarters, and check out four rusty cannons still standing on scanty embattlements under rare trees. Visit the slave yard and inspect a model of the fort as it was reconstructed in 1717. The words "Never Again!" mark a statue of a slave breaking his chains, and a colorful sculpture depicts a slave family. If you have been to Goree Island I think you can give this a pass. It’s much smaller. In fact it might not exist in another 20 years, as it is being swallowed by the river.
