Cave Historique des Hospices de Strasbourg
The six-century history of winemaking in the medieval cellars of Cave Historique des Hospices de Strasbourg was made possible by the donations of thankful generations of hospital patients. A hospital since 1395, this historic cellar is renowned for the high quality of its wines. The company prohibits advertising, and they reinvest all profits into the purchase of medical equipment for the needy. Local Alsatian vineyards vie for the chance to age their wine in the caves. The hospital is best known for its Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Gris varieties. Your visit to the on-site wine museum features an incredible collection of tools and machinery, such as a wine press dating from the early 17th century and more than 40 ancient aging barrels. One incredibly old barrel is still filled with wine from the year 1472--one of the oldest wines in the world. A visit to Cave Historique des Hospices de Strasbourg represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Strasbourg attractions website to plot your vacation.

This was a very unique wine tour that occurs in the caves of the hospital. The gentleman who gave the tour was delightful and funny. The wines were good and inexpensive.

I've been here twice. The history is fascinating and I loved reading through all the history signs in the cave and of the wine making there. Lots of wine for purchase, many coming from the barrels you see there. Very eerie being in the basement of the hospital. Totally a little-known hidden gem to visit while you're in Strasbourg. Don't miss the explanation of the creepy room at the end - yikes!

This cellar is one of the best places we visited in Strasbourg. Rich with tradition, passion and history. We went on a Saturday and they had a wine tasting with all the regional winemakers, free of charge. A suggestion would be to email them and ask which days they host these tastings when you visit. We planned to taste a few wines and move on and ended up walking away with a box of wine and contact details of half the wine estates.
