Create an itinerary including Monastere de Saorge
French architecture finds its roots back in ancient historic ages. Monastere de Saorge is the only existing building in the world with French monastic architecture. It is an epitome of Franciscan art. At the entrance, lies a rectangular abbey. There are majestic murals, better known as frescos, with 25 glass arches on top. It represents the journey of St. Francis’ life at Assisi. Towards the upper end of the walls, there are Baroque frescoes and sundials. The sundial is a signature of Franciscan art, which depicts the might of the Sun. The dining room is painted with vibrant colors. The four walls of the room represent allegories of 4 Franciscan monastic qualities that are: chastity, obedience, poverty, and humility. Inside, there is also the special church of Our Lady of Miracles. It houses 14 paintings, some of the oldest in the world. The masterpiece of the monastery is the garden outside. The monks cultivate vegetables, to feed the villagers here. See Monastere de Saorge and all Saorge has to offer by arranging your trip with our Saorge itinerary planner.
