Gazon du Faing, Plainfaing

Located on the main crest of the Vosges Mountains, Gazon du Faing is a granite summit on the ridge between the Col du Bonhomme and Schlucht, and is a protected national nature reserve. The GR 5 trail crosses the summit, and the ascent is not difficult, as the crest slopes in a W pattern across the tundra-style landscape. A hike to the summit goes through three major habitat types: tanet (forest), stubble (altitude grasslands), and faing (wetlands). The mixed forest consists of beech, fir, and spruce, providing shelter for deer, chamois, black woodpecker, and boreal owl.
