Create an itinerary including Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg
Fancy a wander through a thirteenth century castle overlooking the Alsatian plain? Beautiful Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is located in Orschwiller, Alsace amidst the sprawling Vosges Mountains just west of Sélestat. Due to the castle’s strategic locale, the castle was well used by successive powers from the Middle Ages on. Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg was passed down from the Hohenstaufen family to the Dukes of Lorraine, who in turn entrusted it to the Ratsamhausen family (knights from Middle Alsace), who then held the castle until the fifteenth century. It’s believed that in the midst of the Thirty Years War, the castle was abandoned. From 1900 to 1908, it underwent an intense restoration phase under the watchful eye of Emperor Wilhelm II. Today, the castle is a highlight in the region, and if you’ve signed yourself up for an Alsace wine tour, Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is a popular stop. Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , international travel planner Edition.

  • Really very unfriendly security people at the castle and: no dogs allowed! Totally hilarious! The walking way outside the castle is beautiful - and the view is stunning!

  • We spent around 2 hours walking around the castle. It is well restored, currently there is no tour or audio tour. You do a self guided tour and there are signed every where with description of the...

  • One of the best renewed and conserved castles I have seen in Europe. The place itself on top of the hill offers spectacular views over the valley. Entrance at 9 euro is quite adequate and there's very easy free parking on the road.
  • The castle was beautifully restored. There were various furnished rooms and an area with large cannons which are especially interesting for kids. The only downside was the fact that the castle was bursting at the seams with people. At times it was hard to walk without bumping into others. So it might be a good idea to arrive earlier in the day.
