Create an itinerary including Fort De Schoenenbourg
As you descend 30 m (98 ft) underground to tour 3 km (1.8 mi) of subterranean bunkers at Fort De Schoenenbourg, you'll be reminded that no known weaponry in 1940 could destroy these armored bunkers. Completed in 1935, the fort was deemed indestructible when it withstood the assaults of German bombs in June 1940. After post-war reconstruction, the fort and underground tunnels survive today in excellent condition. You can descend on your own, or join a two-hour guided tour of the munitions entrance, troops kitchen, railway station, morgue, headquarters, explosives room, the blocks, and more passages. Wear warm clothes and comfortable shoes to the fort, as the underground area is a cool 13°C (55°F). Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to Fort De Schoenenbourg by using our Hunspach trip planner.

  • Really, really big bunker. Be prepared for a long and cold walk. And for being humbled and impressed by the giant engineering endeavour that took place here. Lots of signs in French, German and English give a good idea of what it was like in the bunker during the war. If you want to do at least one bunker in the area, do this one.
  • Great historical experience. Worth visiting and going inside. Takes time to see and walk all the tunnels. Wonderful to see how it has been brought back to life.
