Somme American Cemetery and Memorial
Somme American Cemetery and Memorial honors the World War I military from France and the United States. Most lost their lives while serving in American units attached to British armies or in operations near Cantigny. The headstones, set in regular rows, are separated into four plots by paths that intersect at the flagpole near the top of the slope. At the eastern end of the cemetery a massive bronze door with an American eagle leads into the chapel, whose outer walls contain sculptures of military equipment. My tour guide Regis brought my here to this little known cemetery, honoring American involvement during the 100 Days offensive in the Somme. I consider myself a history buff but didn't know anything about the importance of the US troops involvement in helping to breach the Hindenburg Line in this region. The staff was extremely welcoming and knowledgeable. It is a very peaceful and well maintained place to walk the grounds and learn more about these unsung American heroes who helped bring an end to The Great War. Inside one of the structures is a beautiful stained glass arrangement showing the insignias of all of the divisions who fought in this battle. Visiting here has inspired me to learn more about this battle.

Corporal Samuel Young Jr a son of the Bronx, NY is buried there. Our local American Legion Post is named in his honor. When we commemorated the 100 year anniversary of his sacrifice we received a beautiful picture of his grave for the ceremony.
