Mastic Trail, Breakers

Walk in the footsteps of natives some 200 years ago as you explore the restored Mastic Trail. Containing one of the largest examples of native Caribbean dry forest, as well as subtropical mangrove swamps, this 3.7 km (2.3 mi) hike meanders across a patchwork of terrains, up to the low-lying island’s highest point. Hike through black and yellow mastic trees and watch for many species of indigenous birds, which are often hidden among the wild orchids and flowering vines. A 170 m (557 ft) hand-built rock causeway flanks the southern side of the walk through a black mangrove forest. The trail has mixed terrain so wear appropriate footwear and carry water with you; allow three to four hours. Guides are available from the National Trust.
