St. James's Park is one of the most pleasurable green spaces in London. The oldest of the city's royal parks, it offers 23 hectares (57 acres) of lawns, trees, and playgrounds around a pond. Take a stroll down the queen's ceremonial route from Buckingham Palace, spot the palace and the London Eye from the Blue Bridge, and enjoy a waterside meal at Inn the Park while spotting ducks, geese, swans, and even pelicans. While in the park, keep an eye out for some of the plaques along the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk. This 11 km (7 mi) route past buildings and locations related to the princess goes through this park, as well as Green Park, Hyde Park, and Kensington Gardens. A visit to St. James's Park represents just the start of the adventure when you use our London travel route builder website to plot your vacation.

We really had a nice time in this park. The little fierce squirrels come to get hazelnuts in our hands and we spent a long time looking at their mimics. The park is really beautiful with its pond, its birds its view of the palace, its geese and its swans.View original -

Mandatory walk between Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace. Spectacular views of the city and free animals that make it charming: squirrels, ducks, pelicans, black and white swans... a delight for a walk.View original

So I simultaneously love and hate this park. I love it for the lake and the brilliant squirrel action. There are fewer places in central London where the squirrels are so entertaining. I hate it because there are usually just too many people there. Selfishly, I'd like this park to myself. And if you visit you'll understand why. Don't get me wrong, there are many more remarkable looking parks, but this one just has something special about it. You can clear your mind. Its small enough to walk and not get lost therefore you can really switch off. The ducks are greedy but when there are ducklings about they are just fun to watch. Its a shame the lake isn't kept cleaner. At times I wonder how anything survives there.

To state the obvious: A beautiful park, in the midst of London, right next to Parliament and Buckingham palace. To be a bit more subtle: Ever wanted to go on a lovely, long stroll through London without too much traffic, buildings but with lots of nature around you? Here's my suggestion for you then: Start your walk at the edge of St. Jame's Park, which is closest to Parliament. From there, cross the park diagonally, past Buckingham palace, towards Hyde Park, where you can enjoy a lovely summer's day.
