Marvel at one of the most significant artistic and architectural achievements in Turkey--and the world--at Hagia Sophia Museum / Church (Ayasofya). Commissioned by the Byzantine emperor in 537, the church was converted into a mosque in the 15th century by Mehmet the Conqueror. Finally, Ataturk declared the site a museum in the 20th century. The transformation of this structure is symbolic of the transformation of the region and its people through centuries of changing empires and governments. This stunning architectural feat is most often noted for its well-preserved mosaics, featuring 30 million gold tiles, and its 6th-century dome. Hagia Sophia Museum / Church (Ayasofya) Reviews
La mezquita espectacular...lastima que esté a tope casi siempre...recomiendo madrugar,y visitar la mezquita azul y santa Sofia...y acordarse de llevar pañuelo y seguir las indicaciones.Y más en Ramadá... more »The spectacular mosque... sorry that it's almost always full... I recommend getting up early, and visiting the blue mosque and St. Sofia... and remember to wear a handkerchief and follow the directions. And more in Ramadaan, which was when we were.
So nice church, so bad they turned it to museum. Turks should let it be for the purpose it was built and save the original paintings on the walls more »
An epitome of Byzantine architecture at its best. An inspiration to many mosques and buildings erected later in Constantinople in the following years. A legacy of Byzantine Roman Empire endured the test of time and passed to the hands of modern Turkish folks as an indisputable landmark of Istanbul seen by the world. This heritage will continue to be carried on and appreciated for generations to come.
Amazing. And really worth trying to get a local guide to take you round. Our guide was superb and explained so many things that we just would not have spotted if we had been on our own. He went at a relaxed pace which was perfect for our group. Really interesting to see the transformations as the building went from temple, to church, to mosque and now a museum.
