Chisinau

— 2 nights
Chișinău Etymology and namesThe origin of the city's name is unclear, but in one version, the name comes from the archaic Romanian word chișla (meaning "spring", "source of water") and nouă ("new"), because it was built around a small spring, at the corner of Pușkin and Albișoara streets. The other version, formulated by Ștefan Ciobanu, Romanian historian and academician, holds that the name was formed the same way as the name of Chișineu (alternative spelling: Chișinău) in Western Romania, near the border with Hungary. Step off the beaten path and head to Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Saviour and Afghan War Memorial To Sons of Motherland - Eternal Memory. And it doesn't end there: stroll through Stefan cel Mare Park, make a trip to Victory Memorial and Eternal Flame, pause for some serene contemplation at The Metropolitan Cathedral “Nativity of the Lord”, and learn about winemaking at Cricova Winery.

As one of the smallest countries in Europe, Moldova earned its independence in 1991 and remains quite unknown to most of the world. As Moldova is located between Romania and the Ukraine, much of its culture borrows elements, such as language and traditional food, from its two neighbors. Moldova sports a rugged countryside with a mild and sunny climate thanks to the neighboring Black Sea. This region's outdoor activities--biking, hiking, horseback riding, and exploring caves--are its main attractions. While Moldova doesn't attract much tourism, it is one of the last places in Europe where you can get a completely authentic local experience.

Known to some as Moldova's "breakaway state," Transnistria can feel like a completely separate country. While the UN does not recognize its independence, Transnistria maintains its own government, police, parliament, and currency. Most of the region's half-million residents are not Moldovan--they are fairly evenly split between Moldovans, Russians, and Ukrainians. Tourism here revolves around the 1990 Transnistria War, in which this region attempted to gain sovereignty. While there is no current conflict here, residents are still separatists. Don't leave without trying the locally crafted wine and cognac, which are good quality and quite inexpensive.
