Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Peggy Guggenheim Collection and Basilica di Santa Anastasia. Get some cultural insight at Doge's Palace and Cannaregio. When in Venice, make a side trip to see Piazzale Castel San Pietro in Verona, approximately 1h 30 min away. There's still lots to do: take in the architecture and atmosphere at Basilica di San Marco, explore the activities along Canal Grande, make a trip to Piazza San Marco, and take in the views from Ponte di Rialto.
