Chisinau

— 16 nights
Chișinău Etymology and namesThe origin of the city's name is unclear, but in one version, the name comes from the archaic Romanian word chișla (meaning "spring", "source of water") and nouă ("new"), because it was built around a small spring, at the corner of Pușkin and Albișoara streets. The other version, formulated by Ștefan Ciobanu, Romanian historian and academician, holds that the name was formed the same way as the name of Chișineu (alternative spelling: Chișinău) in Western Romania, near the border with Hungary. You'll discover tucked-away gems like Saharna Monastery and Tipova Monastery. Change things up with these side-trips from Chisinau: Rocky Monastery of Tipova (in Tipova), Museum of History and Ethnography of Calarasi town (in Calarasi) and Eiffel Bridge (in Ungheni). Spend the 10th (Thu) exploring nature at Trip to Moldova Day Tours. The adventure continues: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Capriana Monastery, pause for some serene contemplation at Dormition of the Theotokos, appreciate the history behind Sculpture of Skateboarders, and shop like a local with Andrei Mudrea - Modern Art.

To find ratings, traveler tips, photos, and tourist information, refer to the Chisinau travel route planning site.

If you are flying in from India, the closest major aiports are Chişinău International Airport and Bălți International Airport. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 24th (Thu) early enough to travel back home.

As one of the smallest countries in Europe, Moldova earned its independence in 1991 and remains quite unknown to most of the world. As Moldova is located between Romania and the Ukraine, much of its culture borrows elements, such as language and traditional food, from its two neighbors. Moldova sports a rugged countryside with a mild and sunny climate thanks to the neighboring Black Sea. This region's outdoor activities--biking, hiking, horseback riding, and exploring caves--are its main attractions. While Moldova doesn't attract much tourism, it is one of the last places in Europe where you can get a completely authentic local experience.
