Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Get a sense of the local culture at Piazza San Marco and Scrovegni Chapel. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Basilica di Sant’Antonio and Ponte dei Sospiri. There's lots more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, contemplate the waterfront views at Canal Grande, admire the landmark architecture of Basilica di San Marco, and steep yourself in history at Doge's Palace.
