Convent of Christ, Tomar

4.8
The Gothic- and Moorish-styled chambers, cloisters, and hallways of Convent of Christ reflect the era of the Templars, Knights of the Order of Christ, and lavishly dressed royals. Meticulously crafted over the course of centuries (since the year 1160), the convent was adorned with extensive wall art, decorative windows, extravagant tiles, colorful gardens, and complex ornaments from top to bottom. Walk through its tall rooms and seemingly endless labyrinths of hallways, and view the Romanesque church, filled with Gothic paintings, gargoyles, and religious sculptures. Outside, explore the gardens filled with trees, flowers, arched passages, fountains, and tombs. Make your Tomar itinerary with Inspirock to find out what to see and where to go.

  • Worth every star! What a spectacularly preserved complex. We thoroughly enjoyed poking into every nook and cranny here. The architecture is stunning. My son enjoyed exploring here, too (he's 7). My father who is older found it quite easy to get around the grounds. Nice that there is a cafe just outside the gates, and also inside. It offers a nice selection of snacks and drinks. Don't leave Tomar without a visit here.
  • A spectacular place. Over a hill overlooking the town, a well preserved mix of cloisters, chapels and gardens is one of the highlights of the whole Portugal. Don't miss the Chapel and the manueline window. On the lower floor you can visit the monks' kitchens while on the upper ones their cells. Not many tourists have discovered this place so you can have many rooms all for yourself at times. Totally recommended
