#4 of 117 in Shopping in Lisbon
Modeled after the Champs-Elysees in Paris, Avenida da Liberdade serves as the main boulevard and walkway in Lisbon. Flanked on either end by Restauradores Square and Marquis of Pombal Square, this 90 m (295 ft) wide avenue was built in 1879. Spend your day visiting the designer shops that line this street, such as Louis Vuitton, Burberry, and Tods, and relax at charming cafes along the way. Stroll down the beautiful mosaic path under the shade of tall trees, take a seat by elegant fountains and lush gardens, or view historical mansions and exhibitions on the famous avenue. The area is also home to the Monument to the Heroes of the Great War, which honors the 40,000 Portuguese soldiers who fought in World War I. • Avenida dos Aliados was opened up in an older square of the 17th century, and very soon transformed into the real political and cultural center of the city. On its south side it is limited by the DAS Cardosas building, while in the north by the town hall. In the east and west there are buildings from the 1920 and 1940, while right in the center there is the statue of King Pedro IV from 1866. North are the places for young people, such as Hard Rock Cafe.
