Cmentarz Wojskowy na Powazkach, Warsaw

4.8
Cmentarz Wojskowy na Powazkach serves as a rich museum of Warsaw's history and a real treasury of funerary sculpture and small architecture. Dominik Merlini, the royal architect to King Stanisław August Poniatowski, designed the cemetery in 1790. The remains of the royal family, relatives, and members of his court are buried in the catacombs. Walk down the southern side of the catacombs, along the avenue of notables, which includes the final resting places of poets, musicians, actors, and other great Pols. A closer look at some of the inscriptions will give you an insight into how they lived and died. The cemetery was declared a national monument and is often compared with Pere Lachaise in Paris. Cmentarz Wojskowy na Powazkach is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Warsaw Edition.

  • This is the "newer" of the 2 Jewish cemeteries we visited in Warsaw. I truly suggest a guide to get the most information out of your visit and to help understand the emotions that you will feel there....  more »
  • A unique place commemorating fallen heroes. It is worth remembering and taking care of such places. I recommend to visit.

  • More than cemetery. This a place where history is mixed with heroes and ordinary people and soldiers who died during the last hundred years or so. You will find many famous people buried there as well as great old trees. A place full of mysterious climate.
  • Place of great history of Poland where many heroes rest in there. It is shrouded in heavy mist of tragic stories of those who gave their lives for Poland.Very overwhelming place a testament to courage and unbelievable heroism of Poles. Many stories that should be made into movies and popularized. Unfortunately there are many graves of communist criminals, traitors and murderers in there, which I think is a great testament to the fact that Poland still has some ways to go before she can be completely free of communist regime. Get those red bastards out of there and let true heroes lie in peace!
