Saluting Battery, Valletta

#3 of 60 in Museums in Malta
Battlefield · History Museum
Witness one of the country's most famous traditions at Saluting Battery. For centuries, the battery overlooking the Grand Harbor served as the first line of defense against invaders. Salutes were fired to mark important occasions and holidays, and to welcome foreign dignitaries. Additionally, at exactly noon each day, a shot was fired so captains could calibrate their ship chronographs. The tradition of a noon shot still continues and today is joined with a shot in the evening. Tour the battery, see the preserved cannons, and attend the salute ceremony. Multilingual audio tours are available, as are guided tours in English. You can also book an exclusive after-hours tour via e-mail. • Funny because you could come here and pay 3€, or go on the upper balcony for free to have the same spectacle... But I'm so happy I paid and I've been! The guide explained everything about all the cannons, it was really interesting! If you're interested in military history you'll definitely find it worth the 3€.
  • A great vista overlooking the harbor. When you take the time to look down, you realize the immense amount of manual labor that went into constructing this place. The saluting canons are worth the visit.
