Torcello Island
Spend a few hours on Torcello Island, and you'll understand why Ernest Hemingway chose this as his writing base in 1948. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta dates back to 639 CE and houses 11th- and 12th-century Byzantine art, including a depiction of the Last Judgment. Look out from the bell tower for views of the countryside. The island also is home to two 14th-century palaces, the Palazzo dell'Archivo and the Palazzo del Consiglio. The latter, originally the seat of the island's government, is now a museum. Stop by Locanda Cipriani, the restaurant and hotel where Hemingway wrote "Across the River and Into the Trees." Looking for a place where you can relax from the hustle and bustle of the city, head to the exceptional island of Torcello. This peaceful, almost uninhabited island is located in the northern part of the Venetian lagoon. The ancient atmosphere of the place is underlined by two beautiful Byzantine churches.
