Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista, Venice

4.6
Founded in the 13th century, Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista once contained artworks by Tintoretto, Bastiani, Bellini, and Carpaccio. One of the city's oldest "scuole," institutions that served as patrons of the arts, the building now serves as an elegant and historic space for special events, like concerts and weddings. Check the website for events held there during your visit, or stop by on your tour of Venice to take a few photos and admire medieval architecture. Across the street, a deconsecrated church still holds one of Tintoretto's works, signed and dated in 1626. • A beautiful little known place, the Great Hall exhibits great masterpieces of Tintoretto and not only, a truly magical place not to be missed, should be more publicized, but Venice you know is full of extraordinary places, then the church is a gem with large canvas of T Little Cloud.

  • These scuole are a distinctive feature of Venetian society from its time as a republic. There are 6 "grande scuole" left, which were confraternities of lay Christians, possibly like a kind of freemaso...  more »

  • This is a very interesting building and just like all the other 'Scuole Grandi', it was supposed to represent the power of the members of the school itself. The building underwent important changes during the course of the 18th century, with a restructuring of the precedence Mediaeval and Renaissant architecture, that characterized it's interior spaces. The main room is called Sala Capitolare and looks magnificent! Before the 18th century, it used to be decorated with beautiful paintings on all walls. These painting have then been moved to the Gallerie dell'Accademia, nevertheless these have been substituted with newer paintings. On the ceiling are two paintings by Tiepolo, which show a very courageous perspective and a wise use of the canvas. Behind this room, is a chapel of the Cross, with a relic of the Real Cross, sheltered in a beautiful gothic sculpture. I would definitely recommend to visit this place, which is also used for conferences and other events!
