  • Turning from Piazzetta San Marco to the left, behind the bell tower of Campania, we ended up on Piazza San Marco. Procuratie is a truly magnificent building that surrounds the Piazza San Marco on three sides, the form is our letter "P" (with a slightly apart base)! They take their name from prosecutors ("procuratori") who lived on San Marco. The procurations consist of three wings "connected" between each other, limiting the area in front of the Cathedral of San Marco: Procuratie Vecchie (Procuratie Vecchie) on the north side, Ala Napoleonica (Napoleonian wing) on the west side and Procuratie Nuove - ex Palazzo Reale

  • The Procuratie Vecchie are located in St. Mark's Square, in the area opposite the basilica. Together with the Napoleonic Wing (or New Procuratie) and the New Procuratie, they form a monumental complex with three U-shaped wings and extend from the Clock Tower to the Napoleonic Wing. They were built in Renaissance style in the first half of the 16th century, designed by an architect whose name is uncertain, replacing an earlier 12th century building destroyed by fire in the early 16th century. It was intended for apartments and offices of the Prosecutors of San Marco. It is spread over three floors. On the ground floor there is a very long arcade with 50 arches all six supported by Doric pillars; On the top two floors there are, for each floor, 100 windows with a full-sixth arch, delimited by Corinthian columns; the building is complemented by a trabeation comprising 100 round windows and, above, a battlement formed by istria stone doors and vases. Today they house shops on the ground floor and offices on the upper floors.

  • This is part of the St. Mark's Square. Former administrative buildings are going to be renewed. Keep an eye on new openings! Some great cafes are situated here and it is next to clock-tower.
  • One of the originally preserved sides of piazza San Marco: amongst the most known squares in the world!
