Palazzo Grassi, Venice
Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Veneto / Province of Venice / City of Venice / Venice / Palazzo Grassi
History unfolds at Palazzo Grassi, a peach-colored 18th-century palace that sits along Venice's Grand Canal. Its academic Classical architecture starkly contrasts with the Byzantine Romanesque and Baroque Venetian styles of the neighboring palaces, a testament to its 1772 completion, which made it a latecomer among palaces on the canal. It features a formal façade of white marble and lacks the lower mercantile openings of its counterparts. The building has served as an art gallery since its restoration in 1983, currently housing the personal art collection of François Pinault, a contemporary art enthusiast. While the building's historical significance is preserved in its exterior, the interior has been completely renovated in a modern design. Take a tour of the building to see the ever-changing contemporary displays exhibited over three floors of the former palace. Un artiste d'aujourd'hui dans un lieu historique, un dialogue entre des époques différentes dans un cadre mis en valeur par une rénovation contemporaine. more »An artist of today in a historic place, a dialogue between different eras in a setting highlighted by a contemporary renovation.
Absolutely stunning place. We went around 17:30 and had the entire, spectacular museum to ourselves. The renovation they did to create the galleries is spectacular. The art just screams out at you. Very friendly staff and still dreaming about this spectacular setting. Of course, it all depends on what exhibition is showing, but in my opinion the building and setting itself is worth a visit. Especially in the late evening!
I loved the visit at Palazzo Grassi. The amalgamation between the building interior and the modern art exhibition was enchanting.
