Sant'Elena is an island of Venice. It lies at the eastern tip of the main island group and forms part of sestiere of Castello. The original island was separated by an arm of the Venetian Lagoon from Venice itself, and was centred on the Church of Sant'Elena and its monastery, originally built in the twelfth century and rebuilt in the 15th.The island has since been expanded to fill in the gap and is linked to Venice by three bridges. It includes the Rimembranze Park, a naval college and a football stadium, Stadio Pierluigi Penzo, in addition to residential areas and Venice Bienniale buildings. The belltower has a ring of 6 bells in B rung with the Veronese bellringing art.

  • This afternoon I was walking around St Helena and I wanted to visit this church. From the boat coming from the Lido I had always seen the apse, semi-hidden, and the ugly square-based bell tower rebuilt in 1950; in Venice everything becomes beautiful, with a few exceptions (like this). The church is next to the stadium, at the bottom of a quietly lined driveway, in a corner of Venice where tourists do not arrive. I found the door closed, topped with an eardrum with a beautiful sculpture. But next to the church there is a cloister closed by a gate. Inside was a person, perhaps a priest, whom I asked to enter. He kindly opened me up and I could visit the church. A place of great suggestion. The church is very old and proves its age. Particular is the ceiling of the nave where there are terracotta rounds, in one of which there is a lion in the position of moeca. The church was deconsecrated in the Napoleonic age and then reopened to worship.
