The monument to Edmondo De Amicis (1846-1908), author of the heart, was designed by Edoardo Rubino (1871-1954) in 1914 and opened nine years later in piazza Carlo Felice. The statue of "sower of words" is symbolically before a high relief with portraits of children.
Once a flagship of the French spirit. A nice business card for those arriving in the city by train as it camped in front of Porta Nuova station. In recent years we have seen a slow and inexorable decline due to abandonment. The benches are now homeless day and night. The 5 entrance gates which, as the sign says, should be closed every night by the city's fire brigade are now perpetually wide open and those who venture into the evening inside would certainly be harassed by thugs and drug addicts who have exchanged the Sambuy garden for a campsite (clothes hanging from trees, bottles of alcohol everywhere and abandoned bedding). Urban cleanliness workers do not have time to clean up and start again as if nothing were in full freedom and impunity. I like to imagine that this garden so loved by tourists of a time not far away can return to being a corner of Turin that deserves to be remembered.
