Chiesa di San Ponziano, Spoleto

4.7
San Ponziano is a romanesque-style, Former-Benedictine monastery and church located in Spoleto, Province of Perugia, region of Umbria, Italy. The site is dedicated to St. Ponziano, the patron saint of Spoleto.
A Benedictine monastery for male monks was present at the site since before the 14th century. The present structure was extensively refurbished in 1788 by Giuseppe Valadier. He retained much of the Romanesque façade, but the interiors have neoclassic decoration. The crypt maintains frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries; it houses a reliquary with the skull of San Ponziano, which is included in a procession on his feast days. In 1810, the monastery, then housing Benedictine nuns, was suppressed by the Napoleonic government.
Today the basilica and monastery is operated by a community of Canonesses Regular of the Lateran. The canonesses operate the ancient monastery as a religious guesthouse, open to all.

  • Just outside the old town, near the church of San Salvatore, is this monastic complex with the annexed church, where we stopped by accident. We were welcomed by the very kind and well-prepared caretaker who, right from the entrance portal, has charmed us with the history and all the curiosities of the place:!!!

  • Certainly in Spoleto there is better, however the visit can be interesting thanks to the explanations of the Guardian/guide/? Accompanying the tourists during the visit. However, the warm advice is to clarify to visitors its role. We were greeted with a "I turn on the light" and then be hand-carried in a real guided tour duration about half an hour (but would have lasted longer if we had not rushed the step trying not to appear too rude). It costs nothing to show up and explain how the visit works and whether or not you like the accompaniment and possibly specifying what you intend to stop and that a final offer is welcome, among other things not obligatory and politely requested. It must be said however that the guide turned out to be very prepared and pleasant to listen to, so it would be very little to perfect the visit!
