San Francesco, Siena

4.3
Erected in the 13th and expanded the 14th and 15th centuries, San Francesco features a neo-Gothic facade and frescoes by Jacopo Zucchi, Pietro Lorenzetti, and Giuseppe Nicola Nasini. The church is rather cavernous, with large stained glass windows adding to the feeling of airiness. • Go straight down the street next to the Sarnebeni Palace on Banki di Sopra Street. With its brick exterior, the walls were impressive with black and white stripes, like a duomo inside. Paintings are displayed on both sides, and stained glass is also beautiful. There was also a courtyard.

  • Beautiful town with many interesting points. I suggest visiting the museum; my daughter loved being able to try on medieval armour and weapons. Chainmail is no joke.
  • Away from the hustle and bustle of the enchantingly impressive Duomo di Siena, this beautiful building is just as remarkable and probably easier to enjoy as it's free and almost empty. It's definitely worth the 5-minute diversion away from the busy centre.
