Take a step back in time to Pienza (then called Corsignano) circa 1459 with a tour of Palazzo Piccolomini, the summer home conceived for Pope Pius II as part of his "ideal city." The palace has the distinction of being the first example of Renaissance architecture and boasts the first-known roof garden. The square, chiseled-stone construction features 23 equally spaced windows and an ornamental cornice, and an opulent courtyard and portico sit at its center. Used as a residence for the Piccolomini family until 1962, the site contains the original furnishings, which you can see as you walk through the dining room, music room, office, library, and bedroom. Bring your camera, as the back garden makes for a stunning setting against the pale pastel backdrop.
