Sacra di San Michele, Sant'Ambrogio di Torino

Admire the marble "Porta dello Zodiaco," a 12th-century masterpiece, at Sacra di San Michele. Until recent times, skeletons of dead monks were visible at this large religious complex atop of Mount Pirchiriano. You can still walk up the Stairway of the Dead, which is flanked by arches and tombs. Explore the grounds of the Romanesque church and discover ruins from a monastery and an ancient church. After the winding drive to this area, you'll need to take a short, steep walk up from the parking lot. You must wear modest clothing to enter; you can borrow a shawl to cover your shoulders. Our Sant'Ambrogio di Torino trip itinerary planner makes visiting Sacra di San Michele and other Sant'Ambrogio di Torino attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • For me this is the fourth Monastery dedicated to the Archangel - the first was on an island of Ireland - the second in England (island in the Atlantic) - the third, the most beautiful and splendid, the Mont St Michel in France - and now in northern Italy, on the summit of a mountain to Sacra d i San Michele. For me, what touched me the most, it messed with my interior, because you feel the environment, its inner beauty, although little preserved, because it suffered from a fire not long ago. It's little visited. From difficult access, to drive up the mountain on a narrow and tortuous road. But you can be sure: it's worth it. Now, in the near future: the fifth in southern Italy.
