Sacra di San Michele, Sant'Ambrogio di Torino

Admire the marble "Porta dello Zodiaco," a 12th-century masterpiece, at Sacra di San Michele. Until recent times, skeletons of dead monks were visible at this large religious complex atop of Mount Pirchiriano. You can still walk up the Stairway of the Dead, which is flanked by arches and tombs. Explore the grounds of the Romanesque church and discover ruins from a monastery and an ancient church. After the winding drive to this area, you'll need to take a short, steep walk up from the parking lot. You must wear modest clothing to enter; you can borrow a shawl to cover your shoulders. • Reading on the site of the sacred I had seen that every first Saturday of the month you can make a guided tour that in addition to the church, terrace and staircase of the dead, also provides access to the monastery where the monks live. A full visit by adding only 2 euros to the ticket price. So during our stay in Torino we took advantage of this opportunity and visited the Sacred saturday afternoon. Very interesting visit. The guides (3 people) were good although one out of all seemed really prepared and had a nice ringing voice easy to hear despite the large group (120 people), the other two so so. However the place is beautiful, the abbey deserves to be seen and the full tour was interesting. I do not give the 5 stars because to visit with such large groups it becomes really difficult to move, move, feel and understand... Anyway visit to make if you are in Turin!

  • The strenuous climb is rewarded by a spectacular panorama, I recommend booking your guide otherwise you will miss something interesting, comfortable shoes and camera are indispensable, entrance 8 euros, there are toilets, a shop of souvenir and a fountain for water, just down there is a bar.
