  • The church is a beautiful Romanesque building that has inside the frescoed walls with scenes of the old and new will. With the audio guide we were able to follow the explanation of the scenes represented by the frescoes and understand what the painters wanted to represent.

  • Let me make a premise: I do not know to you, but I often get into a church and not be able to enjoy the works of art that are exhibited there, because often there is very little light and there are no lighting devices, and even more often , the works are not identified, that is, you do not indicate the painter or the sculptor, so you end up turning in a vacuum. If I am objected that the church is first and foremost a place of worship, I answer that the two things are not an alternative: I can do my duty as a faithful and at the same time admire the works on display. In this case instead (here in the college I mean) the function of museum clearly takes over that of religious building, because before entering I have to pay a ticket, cross a place regulated by a turnstile, as in the football fields, and then be introduced into the church and looked on sight so as not to linger too much in one place or not disturb groups of visitors who have booked. You understand that we are moving from one excess to another, even if both cases are dependent on the same ecclesiastical authority. But is the visit worth it? Yes, it's worth it, because we're faced with an admirable example of 14th-century painting, and besides the whole set of aisles is really fascinating. The church testifies, like the nearby square, of the fame that Once enjoyed San Gimignano, fame mainly due to the fact of being along the Via Francigena.

  • The state of the ancient frescos is pretty good, giving a good insight into Italian middle age interpretation of Bible stories.
  • Traveling from Siena to Florence we decided to stop off at San Gimignano. This is a Medieval town that was around since the 1300's and was wiped out by the black plague. It was later, 500 years or so, re-inhabited. The view and the history is amazing.
