#20 of 525 in Historic Sites in Rome
Basilica Papale San Paolo fuori le Mura represents the second largest church in Rome and houses St. Paul's tomb below its crypt. As one of Rome's four ancient basilicas, this church was founded by Roman Emperor Constantine I in the 4th century--later emperors and popes continued to add to the building's structure. Today, visitors tour the building to see its Classical facade, colossal columns, the ancient and original apse and triumphal arch, and the Holy Door, a feature found in each of the four major basilicas. Be sure to check out the past popes' portraits hanging on the walls. • According to descriptions, it is one of the 4 largest Roman churches. It's really huge on the inside, inside, you feel a little lost in it. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

  • The basilica is located from the center of the city, but by metro we will reach a dozen minutes' walk and the station is a few minutes' walk from the basilica. At first glance, after leaving the subway we will see that it is a different world and far from the tourist center. It is here that the only time when visiting all the attractions of Rome, I found peace and quiet. On Saturday morning there were literally a few people in the basilica besides me. Amazing impression as in solitude I could walk on the huge main aisy, stand under the altar, pray at the tomb of St. Paul. And all in complete silence. It is definitely worth recommending if someone wants to relax from the hustle and bustle of other basilicas.

  • A holy and historic place of worship. A wonderful architectural works of art. A marvelous edifice. Very interesting to behold. I would like to visit again.
  • One of the four major basilicas of Rome, the location of this basilica marked the burial place of Saint Paul the Apostle. The saint's tomb is located beneath a marble tombstone in the basilica's crypt. The space here is simply magnificent. My visit here was one of the most memorable highlights from my vacation in Rome.
